How to choose your first baby wrap?
How to choose your first baby wrap?
Decision made – we want to carry our baby in a wrap! Great! All that’s left is to choose what to carry our little one in. Simple? Not necessarily.
There’s a huge choice of wraps, carriers and slings on the market, and it’s easy to get lost in all the information.
The best choice to start babywearing is a woven wrap. Why? Tied well, it gives an ideal, ergonomic position. It supports the spine perfectly and provides the best conditions for healthy hip development. It is very versatile: you can tie many different carries and wear your baby on the front, on the hip and on the back. One wrap will last you through your whole babywearing journey!

Which wrap to choose?
The wrap should have a broken twill, diamond or herringbone weave. It can also be a jacquard.
You have to love your wrap! Choose a fabric you feel good in, one that suits you and that you’ll enjoy putting on.
It should have the appropriate certificates – that guarantees your baby’s safety. Babies often put the wrap in their mouths, so check what it’s made of and whether it can be machine-washed. Little ones get dirty easily, and new mums are busy. A cotton wrap or a cotton-bamboo blend works well.
How to choose the wrap length?
Woven wraps are a long piece of fabric (from 2.7 m to 8 m), about 70 cm wide.
The wrap is chosen to fit the person carrying, not the age or size of the baby. The same wrap will be good for a newborn and for a two-year-old. You can tie different carries that need different lengths of fabric, but a base-size wrap lets you tie the most common carries, and for most parents it will be enough as their only wrap. The most popular woven wrap sizes are:
- 4.6 m (size 6) – base size for people who wear clothing size 42/44 (UK 14/16)
- 5.2 m (size 7) – base size for people who wear clothing above size 42/44 (UK 14/16), tall women over 178 cm and men over 185 cm, even of slim build
- 4.2 m (size 5) – base size for petite mums
Does a woven wrap have only advantages?
Pretty much. Learning to tie it takes some effort. However, most wraps come with tying instructions, and there are video tutorials online. You can also get help from a babywearing consultant.
The second option is a stretchy wrap. It’s a bit easier to learn to tie. It comes in one length and has one carry you use (with variations). It’s a choice for the beginning of your babywearing journey. A stretchy wrap is comfortable for the baby up to about 10 kg.
Often, before the baby reaches that weight, they are no longer happy with just one front position.
Usually, as the next step in their babywearing adventure, parents choose an ergonomic carrier. But that’s another story...
